Acne Scars
What are acne scars?
Acne scars are tiny scars that linger on your skin long after a breakout of acne. Acne occurs when your pores become clogged with bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells to form inflamed pimples or deep nodules.
Large pimples can rupture by themselves or when you pick or pop them. When they rupture, your skin uses its natural healing response to heal the affected skin. Sometimes, the healing doesn’t result in smooth and even skin and small acne scars appear in place of your acne.
What types of acne scars can I get?
There are two main types of acne scars: Luckily, both can be treated and reduced. They are:
Hypertrophic or keloid scars
These scars are raised or elevated above your skin’s surface. They result from excessive collagen and scar tissue formation during the healing process.
Atrophic or depressed scars
These scars are indented into your skin. They’re the result of lost tissue after picking or popping your acne.
What are the benefits of treating my acne scars?
Treating your acne scars isn’t necessary to your health, but it improves your appearance and your self-esteem. It may also make it easier to keep your skin clean and healthy after removing bothersome scars.
How can I get rid of my acne scars?
At Chico Dermatology, O. Jay treats both types of acne scar using the Icon™ laser by Cynosure®. The treatment is simple, comfortable, and noninvasive with permanent results.
During the treatment, the powerful laser targets your acne scars and breaks apart the scar tissue that forms them. Your body absorbs the broken-apart scar tissue to leave you with gorgeously even textured and toned skin.
How many acne scar treatments will I need?
Each case of acne scarring is different, but most take several treatments with the Icon laser to see ideal results. Usually, O. Jay recommends that you get between three and seven treatments to reduce your acne scars and smooth your skin for a natural finish.
The treatments don’t require any downtime or complicated recovery instructions, so you’re free to go back to work immediately after each acne scar treatment procedure. Each session lasts about 30 minutes.
